Wonder Bunny goes through all the things we're talking about each Sunday. He wonders, "What is the Point of Life?" "He wonders, "Why Did God Make Me This Way?" He goes through tempation, frustration/anger and he feels empty. The fellas at BORN in Los Angeles did a great job putting this together for us.

We had 221 to officially to launch Seven San Diego Church. We are thankful for each and everyone. Now we move to the Otay Ranch Town Center and the AMC theater, we'll be in Theater #7 of course. Lot's to do before our 2nd official service this Sunday.

Real church begins February 10. We've had a blast. Absolutely, getting Seven San Diego down the runway and getting ready for lift off has been a joy, a challenge, and all of the emotions one can imagine when doing something you passionately believe in.

The Preview totals are in: 643 people in four preview services for an average of 161 people. We are so excited. Thank you to all who have made this possible.
Message
Check out the message from the weekend on our website entitled, "What to do When iNeed a New Start." from our final installment of our iNeed a Life series...a guided tour through messy spirituality. For more information about our latest series entitled: Journey into Wonderland, Answering Life's Most Pondered Questions check out our website or blog at www.sevensdchurch.com or sevensd.blogspot.com.

We've got a lot to do between now and February 10 so please continue to pray for us as we embark on this brand new stage in the life of Seven San Diego...weekly church gatherings..phew...

Chargers
On to other subjects. My Bolts! Big win over Indy. This team has it. We beat the defending Super Bowl champs twice this year! That's not easy. My best bud is huge Packers fan so if his Packers make it and my Chargers make it we're heading to Phoenix for the Super Bowl, somehow, some way we'll find a way there to see the game. But first we've got our hands full with the undefeated New England Patriots. It's payback time. Last year they took us out of the playoffs and rubbed it in our face. Oh how sweet it would be to take 'em out now. Not that it really matters in all eternity and all that spiritual stuff(I have to say that as a pastor)...but man it would be sweet :)

Message
Last weekend I spoke at Skyline Church (skylinechurch.org) about hearing from God. If you need to hear from God go to our website and get the message, "How to Hear in the New Year." www.sevensdchurch.com. That doesn't sound right, I mean if you want to see what the Bible says about how to hear from God then get the message on our website.

Preview #4
This weekend January 13th. The fourth and final installment of Seven SD previews and then we're ready to launch Feb. 10.

Atlanta
This week my wife and I fly to Atlanta for interviews with the North American Mission Board. This is the culmination of a six month process in order to get support for our mission in San Diego. Three days of interviews and a travel day leading up to our fourth preview, it's a lot in a week but we know we need this help and it's a great organization.

Book Writing
I've begun to write my first book entitled: Church Launching while living with your Mom, your house hasn't sold, your stuff is chewed up by the three dogs that live with you, your cars break down, your clothes are still in boxes somewhere in your POD and you can't think of anything you'd rather be doing.

Chargers
True, 13 years is a long time to wait for a playoff victory but oh it was so sweeeeet. On to Indy for the divisional round and then to New England (possibly) to ruin their perfect record! If the Bolts make it to the Superbowl I must find a way to get there. I think I can pray for that.

What I'm reading now

Good stuff. Maxwell comes full circle when he admits that a positive attitude isn't all it takes to succeed in life, "My attitude 20 years ago was, 'believe and achieve' all you have to do is believe it and make it happen.'" He goes on to say that you must add to attitude competence. For example I can believe I am a great singer and have a great attitude about singing but I don't have the competence in that area so attitude doesn't help me there.

I think the book has a great balance between learning to have a great attitude and the practical ways to go about making your attitude the difference maker in your life but not the only thing in your life. I think you'll like it even if you're not a Maxwell fan as I am.

Skyline Church

Just finished speaking at five services at Skyline Church in Rancho San Diego. Skyline is one of our church partners and it was an honor to speak there this weekend. After each service they took a love offering for Seven San Diego. It is sacrifices like that that make it possible for a new church like ours to get started.

The MAC

A couple other things to note: We now have our official ministry action center or simply "offices" and warehouse to go with. We do not currently have furniture but we are working on that. We do have a fantastic espresso maker thanks to our friends at High Desert Church that has finally found its home in San Diego.

Here's to the New Year

I always look forward to the new year. And of course the new year means new goals and visions and things I want to accomplish. This new year is no different in that I'm really looking forward to seeing all that God has for us in 2008.

A win in community service speak is an event that turns out to do just what one envisions and even more. Over 500 people came today to the Kids Matter Safety Fair. I have an awesome team to work with and they really pulled this off. Jules Sneddon is a huge blessing in getting the Safety Fair to this level of proficiency and effectiveness in our first attempt. We had 14 CHP officers doing the car seat checks. The line of cars was backed up. The fire department came. We had three bounce houses (one huge one with a slide) with kids flying off the walls in all of them. We had hundreds of hot dogs being swallowed by the masses. The Sno Cone machine was buzzing all day (it was 75 degrees and not a cloud in the sky today). The cotton candy was spinning all day. The popcorn was popping all day. The band Monday's Alibi did a fantastic job. Santa was set up on a Hollywood movie set like area for pictures with kids. Brittany took pictures of the kids, downloaded 'em onto her mac and printed them on a very cool Seven SD Christmas card. Tons of families took advantage of this little perk.

I talked with the mayor at length about Chula Vista and Otay Ranch and how Seven San Diego can partner with the city to make a difference. I met with a Chula Vista council member at length to discuss future developments in Otay Ranch. Great stuff.

Thanks to all of our new team members that joined us to help for this event. Thanks so much for becoming part of the Seven SD family.

Next Saturday we've got free Christmas gift wrapping at the Wal-Mart in Otay Ranch and Barnes and Noble and the car wash at Wal-Greens next to Wal-Mart.

We took tons of pictures and videos that will be downloaded shortly. Check back soon and also see our church website at www.sevensdchurch.com.

We're doing our Kids Matter Safety Fair on Dec. 15th and we've connected with the band "Monday's Alibi." These guys are awesome. They will be playing for us at the Kids Matter Safety Fair. We'll also have Santa there for free pictures with the kids, bounce houses, food, CHP, Fire Dept., and so much more! Then, on Dec. 22 we're doing two service projects. The guys are getting together to wash cars, hand out info, etc. and the ladies are going to do free gift wrapping in front of Wal-Mart in Otay Ranch.

We continue to gear up, get the word out and believe we are in the right place at the right time with the right people to make a difference.

We used it all up (except for a few donut holes consumed by the worker elves). We had great feedback and from the community of Otay Ranch for our serving those people cold, thirsty and standing in line needing a hot cup of Starbucks...for some it was a dream come true and an answer to prayer. Many people commented how great it was to see a church meeting the needs of people in such a unique way. Others said how they've been looking for a church and some promised on their donut hole they'd come visit us, we'll hold 'em to it!

Hopefully, we planted some seeds and laid more groundwork for getting the word out about this mission called Seven San Diego Church.

2:30am, getting the coffee ready at the Sneddon's in Otay Ranch

Preview #2

Woo Hoo! #2...Preview #2 is now history. 166 people made their way to Seven San Diego. We are halfway to our offical launch date on February 10, 2008. It is rapidly approaching. As part of the building process predictions from Church plant experts and other church leaders said you can expect about 50% of your first time total attendance (which was 261) so the bar was set at 130 and a half (I feel bad for that half person) people and I had a realistic goal of 150 people for our team so when 166 showed up I was ecstatic! I met so many people from the Otay Ranch, Chula Vista community and even greater San Diego community that had heard about us on the radio or through a mailer or door hanger. Afterward we had a lunch for people to hang out and get to know one another and ask me and our team questions about Seven San Diego. I talked with so many people right up until we had to get cleaned up and get out of there so the custodian at Olympian HS could go home. What a thrill.

Once again our peeps from the HD were so great to come and help us. Great to see all of you and thank you for your commitment. We are really looking forward to December 9th. We have some events planned for the community. Our Kids Matter Safety Fair has been rescheduled for Dec. 15. We are also planning on handing out donuts and coffee to people standing in line the day after Thanksgiving for the biggest shopping day of the year known as BLACK FRIDAY. We'll hit the Wal-Mart and Target shops in our area. I hear there are hundreds of people in line for these things because of the huge discounts given on this day only and for just a couple of hours apparantly. So people line up all night to be the first to get in on the discounts. What better way to connect with these people as they are stuck in line waiting, cold, hungry and thirsty for hot coffee. Seven SD to the rescue! Ok, that's a bit dramatic but it'll be cool to give 'em our info along with a hot cup of Starbucks and a Krispy Kreme or two. We will also do an teacher appreciation and/or fire department appreciation day with our ladies baking a bunch of cookies and delivering them to the teachers at Olympian HS and fire department down the street.

We're looking forward to making a difference in our community!

Preview Service #1

We've got preview service #1 under our belt! What a great feeling to see the people show up on October 7. 261 people made their way to Seven San Diego Church and we were thrilled to have them. All in all the service went extremely well. We certainly have things to improve on and things we missed but nothing glaring...just stuff someone as nit picky as me picked up. I am so proud of our team. Man, what a great group to serve with. Seriously, we had people ready to go at 6:30am and everthing was ready and set by 9:30am easily. We had time to grab donuts and coffee and welcome our guests at 10:00am.

So, with #1 behind us we've got a lot of work to get to Preview #2 on November 4. We will have our Kids Matter Safety Fair on October 27th. The CHP told us to expect 8,000 people.....Waaaaahhhhtttt??? Yep, our CHP rep said it could easily have to be closed down because of traffic issues within the first 30 minutes or so. They've done these before in other areas of town and seen an incredible response. We're excited...We're going to do this in the Wal-Mart // Home Depot parking lot about a mile from our church. Wal-Mart has been very supportive, they will be giving out flyers for the event with our name on them for the two weeks leading up to this event. The CHP, Fire Dept. and many other agencies are advertising this on radio, tv, flyers and our name is on all of it! We're glad to be making these inroads into the community and as we do we see the importance of being "relevant" to the community by serving the community we're in. It's real work, no question, but it's great work and we're thrilled to be doing it. There's more to do and the more we do the more we see we can do and need to do. We are just beginning. We had some great stories of people who came to our preview on October 7 because of the car wash, the doggie treat give away, and other servant evangelism projects we did.

We are also doing a block party on October 31st. We're renting out Santa Venetia park (down the street from our church) and having music, Trunk R' Treat, giveaways like glow sticks, flash lights, fun stuff for the kids, etc. The park is right in the center of a bunch of houses and of course there will be tons of activity on Halloween so we're looking forward to continuing to introduce ourselves to the community in this way.

Today, we took some of our team to a church plant in Corona called "Vantage Point." They are on essentially the same schedule as us doing previews leading up to their launch on February 10, 2008. It was good to be with them and see what they're doing and some stuff that worked and some stuff that hasn't worked for them. It's interesting, they are in a new area called "Eastvale" in Corona. Driving up to their location at an middle school I saw several signs for new churches! This is obviously a booming area but wow!~ On Cleveland Street they have a brand new...huge...elementary school, then on the same side of the street they have a brand new huge! Middle School, then BOOM! right next to it on the same side of the street is a HUGE!!! High School. There were two churches in the High School, Two churches in the elementary school (including Greg Laurie's Harvest video venue) and One church at the middle school (Vantage Point). That's FIVE churches on the same street!!!! all brand new AND I spoke with the pastor at Vantage Point and he said they are waiting for Saddleback to plant a church there too because they said they are coming soon. It's encouraging to see the Church stretching and trying to reach more people.

Office Space: Our office offer did not go through after all. However, tomorrow I am going with our broker to look at six different offices that fit our needs. We are looking forward to having a ministry center and a consistent place to hold our seminars, classes, and midweek meetings. At this point it looks like we'll have our choice as there are lots of offices on the market right now. However, I think that will change soon as the brand new 125 freeway is supposed to open in about a month and that's going to open up a whole new region with access from all over the county. Businesses are getting ready for the influx of people. Otay Ranch Town Center has just opened more stores (The Freeway runs right by it) and the freeway runs right by our church...it's great, just great. For my family coming from the East County the 125 is a huge blessing, cutting off 20-25 minutes of drive time.

I'm rambling now, thanks for reading, thanks for praying, thanks for giving.

Last year, the Marlboro Man topped the list of 101 “most influential people that never lived”. In their book, Allan Lazar, Dan Karlan and Jeremy Salter rank characters of myths, legends, television, and films. These men from New Jersey entertain the idea that even people that never existed in the real world have had the ability to “shape our society, change our behavior, and set the course of history”. And…well…they’re right! These characters have changed our thinking, for better or for worse.

While I’m usually excited about reading through list, I found this list to be alarming. Don’t get me wrong, this list was fun to read, but it also made me uneasy. The influence these “nobodies” have had on our culture is substantial. As a marketer, I get excited when “brands” pervade so deeply, but I certainly don’t jump out of my skin when the “brand” promotes unhealthy habits, poor dietary behaviors, inflated alter egos, or mindless consumption.

Ladies and gentleman, when are we really going to start raging against the machine? When are we really going to start getting real? I find that the “nobodies” these days are making a difference only because the “somebodies” have stopped believing in what they could do to change the world. The “somebodies” have taken a backseat to fabricated truths about sex, drugs, and yes, even rock and roll.

If you want to start making a difference in people’s lives, you’ve got to start living life. You’ve got to start blogging about things that will help enrich others. You’ve got to stop posting discouraging notes to friends on social networking sites. You’ve got to start uploading videos with good ideas. You’ve got to stop being just another chump on the block! As artists, writers, poets, musicians, or Christ followers for that matter, we bear the responsibility of transforming our cultures for better not worse.

If you desire to make a difference long after you’re dead, you’ve got to stop thinking about your own problems and start helping others with theirs (Phil 2:3-4). If you want to start influencing people, you’ve got to start making better choices about who you want to be. Our attitudes should be the same that Christ Jesus had. The Apostle Paul notes “though he was God, he did not demand and cling to his rights as God (Phil 2:5-6).

Unfortunately, under the influence of a “nobody” like the Marlboro Man, people smoke themselves to death. Fortunately, under the influence of a “somebody” like you, people can have a better understanding of a life that is not only physically more enjoyable, but spiritually as well.
Evan Almighty: More Than Meets The Eye

You have less than four days to watch “Evan Almighty” before
it drowns in the flood of hype surrounding the highly anticipated war
epic—“Transformers” (July 4th). The comic take on the biblical story of Noah
and the Ark (Genesis 6-9) is more than just a “feel good” adaptation
encouraging “acts of random kindness.” It is the story of Evan Baxter (Steve
Carell), a former anchorman turned congressmen who gets the opportunity to
change the world. Yes, “Evan Almighty” offers more than meets the eye. Underneath
all the product endorsement, slapstick humor, special effects and Hollywood
fanfare is a simple message about faith. Much like the story found in the book
of Genesis, Evan Baxter does what God has commanded him to do regardless of the
costs.

I suspect that is why director, Tom Shadyac, wanted “Evan
Almighty” to camp on Genesis 6:14. The passage is about God telling Noah what
to do, or in this case, what to “make.” That’s always step numero uno in “Faith
101.” As we read on, we discover that when we obey, God fills in the gaps. In
“Evan Almighty”, God (Morgan Freeman) is quick to remind Evan Baxter of that
truth. This week, as you celebrate patriotism, make sure your consumerism
isn’t just another form of escapism. Please exercise your right to be
“aware-ism”. And, well, if you need a fix of the Office this summer, this film
will suffice. (Originally posted on RoBlog on June 30th, 2007.
